PEC is known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Cab Franc vines. Make sure you try some on your next visit!

Most of the wineries are clustered in the County’s western corner, hugged between the towns of Wellington and Hillier. However, great wineries can be found all over Prince Edward County.

A Brief History of Wine in Prince Edward County

The distinctive terroir of Prince Edward County, characterized by its lakeside climate and a blend of limestone, shale, and clay soils, has been demonstrated to be the ideal combination for nurturing robust cool-climate grapevines. Over the years, the County’s wineries have developed a reputation for producing high-quality wines, earning their place on the international wine stage.

However, grape cultivation in this region is far from simple. Harsh, snowy winters threaten the vines, requiring protective measures to ensure their survival. During the fall, vineyards use techniques such as “hilling up” the vines with earth or covering them with protective fabric. Then, as spring arrives and the thaw begins, a meticulous process of uncovering the vines ensues to protect their growth.
